These are the musings of a hot woman. Not sexy hot. (Sexy is sold separately). I mean H.O.T. Its 30 something ridiculous degrees, our flat-roofed house is now a microwave, and even the mosquitoes are lethargic. Good grief, its not even midday!
Anyway, back to my musings…
We love the heroics of the self made-man and woman. The gods and the goddesses of destiny. The ones who triumphed despite their humble beginnings and all the impossible odds they had to beat. The ones who did it on their own and did it their way. Sometimes we love and admire them so much that our reverence of them immobilises us rather than inspires us. Their accomplishments are so awe-inspiring that for the most part, we are overwhelmed and we relegate them to the world of mythology. A world that is different and apart from us. And a world with no real-life lessons we can learn from.
But I call ‘Bullshit!’ No-one, and I mean NO-ONE is a a self-made man or a self-made woman. No-one.
We all need the support, assistance and guidance of others. Even the rejection we experience forms part of our motivation arsenal. We all have something that we would never have achieved if it were not for that one pain in the butt that taunted us about how we could do it …or would never amount to something. We had to show them and so we did. Take them out of the equation and we probably would not achieved that certain something.
We all need someone to help us think through things and to clarify our ideas and shift our perspectives and believes. We all need to learn something so that we can practically do what needs to be done. We all need someone to complain to and some to cuss with when things go wrong. And when things go right…you guessed it…we need someone to celebrate with. And even if we don’t have someone directly helping us to achieve something, we need someone to go home to to have fun, recalibrate, rejuvenate and even just bring us back down to earth.
I read an article recently in which Arnold Schwarzenegger protested against the idea of a self-made person.
He says: “I always tell people that you can call me anything that you want, but don’t ever, ever call me a self-made man. It gives the wrong impression, that we can do it alone. None of us can. The whole concept of the self-made man or woman is a myth. I would have never made it in my life without the help.”
As much as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a tribe to bring ideas to life and make dreams come true. One day, when you meet a proclaimed self-made man or woman, take selfies with them, loads of them; because its not everyday that you find yourself in the company of a unicorn! And don’t be shy. Ask them for a seat at the golden trough they take meals at at the end of the rainbow. That my friend, would be far more interesting to see on my instagram feed that someone’s omelette and rocket on the side!
So whatever you are you are trying to achieve, big or small, know that you don’t have to do it alone. Find your tribe, find your support. And listen to Arnie!!!
